Dan Rydell is a major character in the first and second seasons of Sports Night. He is played by starring cast member Josh Charles and debuts in "Pilot". He is a sportscaster. He is an anchor for Sports Night.

Dan is from a Jewish family in Connecticut. He had a younger brother named Sam, who died in a motor vehicle accident while under the influence; Dan blames himself for this. He also has an older brother named David and an unnamed sister. He attended Dartmouth. Prior to working at Sports Night, he worked at Lone Star in Dallas with Casey and Dana. In 1x14, he meets Rebecca Wells, for whom he develops feelings; however, she remains married to her estranged husband, and decides to try to work things out with him. Early in season 2, Danny begins seeing a psychologist to cope with his feelings of depression and anxiety around his brother's death and the difficult relationship with his father as a result of that death. Danny is a fan of Tom Waits and can touch-type. He took Biochemistry at some point.
